Reports have been received that Maltese flag vessel SYN ZANIA (3,836gt, built 2008) experienced an explosion and fire on board during cargo operations at the at Petkim petroleum terminal, Aliaga, Turkey yesterday.

Initial fire extinguishing operations were commenced by crew. Subsequently, a Petkim terminal emergency fire brigade team attended the incident scene from the shore side and firefighting tugs attended from the sea side.

At the time of the incident, there were 16 crew members on board. Regrettably one is reported to have died. The remaining 15 crew members were evacuated.

The fire was brought under control at 2330 hrs local time. The incident location has been declared a restricted zone until completion of firefighting operations and investigations.
