Date: 24 May 2019    Type: Fire   Voyage: Vietnam/Korea/China/Thailand;

Reports have been received that Korean flag vessel KMTC HONGKONG (16,731gt, built 1998) is on fire at the port of Laem Chabang, Thailand.

It is understood that the fire originated in the vessel’s cargo. A series of explosions followed, sending debris high into the air.

At least 20 people in the area have been taken to hospital suffering from the effects of a chemical fire originating on board.

KMTC HONG KONG is a Korean container vessel. Before arriving at Laem Chabang, the vessel had called at Hong Kong, Shanghai, Gwangyang, Busan and Ho Chi Minh City.

It is possible that she also has on board transhipment cargoes destined for and originating in other countries. Extensive cargo damage is expected.
