Date: 31st March 2017 Type: Missing Vessel Voyage: From Brazil
Reports have been received that Marshall Islands flag vessel STELLAR DAISY (148,421gt, built 2003) is missing in the South Atlantic after reporting water ingress.
The vessel, a VLOC, with twenty-four crew, including eight South Korean and sixteen Filipinos, was in waters near Uruguay after departing Sepetiba, Brazil on March 26, when she issued a distress signal on Friday evening. One of the crew sent a message to the shipowner saying that the vessel was taking on water and contact was lost shortly afterwards.
The local authorities and Uruguayan navy initiated a investigation and started a large-scale search and rescue operation, involving commercial vessels near the site of the alleged incident. The operation was announced early Saturday, covering a large area around the last known position of the vessel.
Later during the day, there was official information that two lifeboats believed to be from the missing vessel were found with efforts now under way to safely rescue the vessel’s crew members. Two Filipino crew members were later reported rescued with the search continuing for the remaining crew.
