Date: 10th March 2016 Type: Grounding Voyage: Taiwan to Hong Kong
Reports have been received that Taiwanese flag vessel TS TAIPEI (15,847gt, built 2006) ran aground today north of Taiwan.
The containership has suffered water ingress into her engine room. 21 crew members have been taken off the vessel by a helicopter sent by the Taiwanese Rescue Centre.
TS TAIPEI had sailed from Keelung, for Hong Kong, earlier in the day. She generally trades between ports in Taiwan and Hong Kong but is likely to also be carrying transhipment cargoes from and to other ports as well.
If salvage services are required then it is possible that the owners/insurers of the cargo on board will be required to provide salvage security. It is also possible the general average will be declared. It is not clear at this stage whether cargoes have also been damaged.
