Date: 6th April 2014    Type: Explosion  Voyage: India to Sri Lanka 

Reports have been received that Liberian flag vessel NORTHERN GUARD (41,835gt, built 2008) suffered an explosion in one of her cargo holds on 6th April 2014.

Regrettably, one of the crew members has been reported to have lost his life a as result of the accident.

At the time the vessel was off the West Coast of India having sailed from Pipavav on 5th April, for Colombo.

The vessel has now made her way to Mumbai where an investigation will be carried out by the authorities, with the Shipowner’s co-operation.

NORTHEN GUARD generally trades between ports in China, South Korea, Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka. She is probably carrying cargo for other parts of the world also.

The extent of cargo damage is not clear at this time.
