Date: 8th March 2014    Type: Grounding  Voyage: Turkey to Tunisia

Reports have been received that Turkish flag vessel YUSUF CEPNIOGLU (4,984gt, built 1995) ran aground yesterday north of Mykonos Island.

The vessel has taken on water into her engine room and cargo spaces.

Twelve of the fourteen crew members abandoned the vessel shortly after the incident and were picked up by a coast guard vessel and helicopter.

The remaining two crew members including the Master have now also left the vessel.

Minor pollution around the vessel has been noted.

Rescue vessels including tug are on the scene. Some cargo containers have been lost overboard.

YUSUF CEPNIOGLU trades between Turkey and ports in North Africa. But she may also be carrying transhipment cargo for other parts of the world.

She sailed from Nemrut Bay for Bizerta on 7th March 2014.

Some cargo is likely to be lost or damaged. Any cargo that is rescued is expected to attract salvage and/or general average liabilities.
