Date: 8th August 2011     Type: Machinery Failure and Grounding     Voyage: China to Ivory Coast

Reports have been received that Panama flag vessel ANGEL 1 (20,624gt built 1984) has run aground off Port Louis, Mauritius.

The bulk carrier, carrying 30,000mt rice from Zhoushan to Abidjan, initially lost power and dropped anchor but later drifted on to a reef.

Salvors have been engaged in an effort to refloat the vessel. Booms have been placed around the casualty in case of pollution but no leakages have been reported as yet.

It is possible that a salvage claim will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo on board this vessel. It is also possible that general average will be declared.
