Reports have been received that Maltese flag vessel MOONDANCE II (30988gt built 2005) ran aground earlier this month off the coast of East Kalimantan.
Tsavliris Salvage (International) Ltd was contracted on Jan 4 by the owners/managers of the vessel. A salvage team, consisting of a salvage master, salvage officer, salvage engineers, naval architects, divers and riggers, was dispatched from Holland and Greece.
A salvage tug arrived on scene on Jan 13. Lightening operations commenced on Jan 26 and about 18,000 tonnes of the cargo was discharged into three chartered barges. The vessel was successfully refloated on 30th January.
Reloading of the cargo from lightening barges has commenced and is expected to be completed on Feb 1st. The cargo is coal which we understand may be insured in India.
The owners/insurers of the cargo on board will be required to provide salvage security before the cargo can be delivered. It is also likely that general average will be declared.
