Date: 1st September 2010     Type: Listing, Vessel Abandoned by Crew     Voyage: Voyage Romania to Turkey

Reports have been received that Turkish flag vessel MEDY (3836gt built 1982 ) has been abandoned by her crew today in the Black Sea.

The vessel loaded a cargo of 3,250 steel scrap in Romania destined for Turkey. Not long after leaving her load port she was reportedly in danger of sinking and rescue vessels were sent to the scene. The vessel’s crew of 17 has been picked up by rescue vessel GPS King.

MEDY is now reported to be listing 40 degrees to port. It is not yet clear if she can be saved. The situation is being evaluated by the Romanian Authorities.

If the vessel and cargo can be saved, it is likely that a salvage claim will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo on board this vessel. It is also possible that general average will be declared. If the vessel sinks then the cargo will be lost.
