Date: 23rd March 2010     Type: Hijacking     Voyage: Egypt to Iran

Reports have been received that Bermuda flag vessel TALCA (10298gt built 1988) and her crew have been hijacked by Somali pirates. This is the second vessel taken in 24 hours.

The reefer vessel, which had just sailed through the protected transit corridor, was attacked 180 miles off Oman. She was on a voyage from Sokhna to Bushire.

It is likely that a ransom demand will be made by the pirates quite shortly. Shipowners commonly claim a proportion of any ransom payment from cargo owners as a general average contribution.

Because ransom payments can often lead to a very large claim on cargo insurers, it is important that the full circumstances of the hijacking are investigated.

We have acted for cargo insurers in respect of piracy incidents in the past and have often been able to negotiate reductions in general average payments requested from cargo insurers.

This particular claim will be further complicated because of the perishable nature of the cargo that it is on board the vessel.
