Reports have been received that Panama flag vessel IOANNIS N.K. (14498gt built 1977) has sunk off the coast of South Africa. Her crew have been rescued.
The bulk carrier was on a voyage from Brazil to India with a cargo of 22500mt of sugar when she began to take on water.
Helicopters were sent to take off the crew and the vessel sank shortly afterwards, although a salvage tug had originally been sent from Cape Town to assist.

The aging bulk carrier is registered in Panama but operated out of Greece. Until recently, the vessel had been trading between ports in South America. It is possible she was due to be scrapped after this voyage.
