The chemical tanker is understood to have been on a voyage from the United Arab Emirates to Tanzania when she was attacked at the end of last week. Generally, cargo vessels are released from Somalia after a ransom is paid by the Shipowners or their Insurers. Shipowners then usually claim a proportion of any ransom payment from cargo owners/insurers as a general average contribution. Because of this, it is important that the full circumstances of any hijacking are properly investigated so that the extent of cargo owners’/insurers’ liability can be confirmed.
