Reports have been received that Liberian flag vessel BENITA (24,953gt, built 1998) ran aground earlier today off Mahebourg, Mauritius.

The accident happened after a fight broke out between two crew members. One injured crew member has been taken ashore by helicopter. The other was locked in the ship’s engine room.

Local police are in attendance. The bulk carrier, which sailed from Paradip on 5th June 2016, is understood to be aground on a reef.

It is possible that General Average will be declared as a result of this incident. It is also possible that Salvors may bring a claim against cargo owners and insurers.
