Date: 5th November 2011     Type: Lost Rudder    Voyage: From Hornafjordur

Reports have been received that Cyprus flag vessel ALMA (3,817gt built 1997) lost her rudder on 5th November 2011 shortly after sailing from Hornafjordur, Iceland.

The vessel was assisted by tug BJORN LODS and also by another vessel HOFFELL. The casualty was eventually taken into the port of Faskrudsfjordur.

The owners and crew of the vessel HOFFELL have made a salvage claim against the ship and cargo in the Icelandic Courts. The ship and cargo have been detained at the port of refuge and will not be released until adequate salvage security is provided.

Cargo owners/insurers are required to provide salvage security for 25% of the cargo value. Dolphin Maritime is already assisting the insurers of part of the cargo of frozen fish on board. We understand the cargo is owned by Iceland Pelagic, About Fish, Kollafjord Pelagic and possible others.

As well as the salvage claim against the cargo, the Shipowners have declared general average. General average security is also therefore required.
