Date: 29th June 2010     Type: Hull Damage and Grounding     Voyage: Middle Eastern Ports to Far Eastern Ports

Reports have been received that Singapore flag vessel KOTA KADO (31070gt built 2005) struck a submerged object on 29th June in position lat 21 55.0N long 114 05E. At the time she was travelling from Nansha to Singapore

The containership, with 22 crew on board, suffered severe damage as a result. She began to take on sea water into her tanks as well as hold numbers 2 and 3. The ship’s master feared that the vessel might sink and he therefore took the decision to deliberately ground the vessel in waters off Hong Kong approximately 10 hours later.

KOTA KADO is operated by Pacific International Lines Limited. She trades between ports in the Middle East and the Far East, particularly China and Singapore. It is likely that she will also be carrying transhipment cargo for other regions of the world.

It appears that the vessel will require the assistance of professional Salvors. Consequently, it is likely that a salvage claim will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo on board this vessel. It is also likely that general average will be declared.
