Date: 3rd April 2010     Type: Grounding     Voyage: Australia/China

Reports have been received that Chinese flag vessel SHEN NENG 1 (36575gt built 1993) has run aground off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

There are no reports of injuries to crew but the authorities are concerned that the bulk carrier may suffer a fuel leak contaminating the nearby reef.

The bulk carrier is understood to have 65,000mt of iron ore on board destined for China. The grounding has caused a breach in the ship’s hull.

It is possible that a salvage claim will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo on board this vessel. It is also possible that general average will be declared.
