Date: 15.10.09 Type: Fire Voyage: Brazil to Ireland and UK
Reports have been received that Maltese flag vessel (27011gt built 1997) has suffered a fire in her cargo holds whilst loading a cargo of citrus pulp pellets in Santos. The cargo is ultimately destined for delivery in Foynes in Ireland and Glasgow in Scotland.
The fire was first noticed towards the end of last week. Part of the damaged cargo has been removed from the hold but there are still hot spots in the stow. Presently, the vessel is waiting on the berth pending a decision as to what to do with the cargo.
It is clear that some cargo has been damaged. In addition, further expense will have to be incurred if the remaining cargo is to go forward on this vessel and, as a result, it is possible that general average will be declared.
