Date: 19.10.09     Type: Hijacking     Voyage: South Africa/India/China

Reports have been received that Chinese flag vessel DE XIN HAI (40892gt built 2008) has been hijacked today by Somali Pirates in the Indian Ocean.

The bulk carrier is the second vessel taken in a week. An increase in attacks has been anticipated following the end of the monsoon season.

The vessel left Richards Bay on 10th October. She is understood to be destined for India and also China thereafter.

Generally, a ransom is paid by the owners or insurers of hijacked vessels. Ransom negotiations tend to take a few months. The ship owners then claim part of the ransom and associated costs from cargo owners and insurers as a general average expense.

If you have insured cargo on board this vessel and require our assistance to deal with any security demands and claims for general average, please contact us as soon as possible. We have dealt with several piracy claims on behalf of cargo insurers.

It is very important that the full circumstances are investigated so that it can be established whether or not the ship owners are entitled to recover general average contributions from cargo interests.
