Reports have been received that Kiribati flag vessel XIANG ZHOU (2,971gt, built 2009) has sunk following collision with Panamanian flag vessel VAN MANILA (17,225gt, built 2007).
The Shanghai Maritime Search and Rescue Centre reported yesterday that another vessel found and rescued two seamen. They stated that they were from general cargo vessel XIANG ZHOU which was in collision with container vessel VAN MANILA.
XIANG ZHOU, carrying steel coils from Nantong to Korea, sank in approximate position lat 31 03.9N, long 122 47.24E.
The maritime search and rescue centre sent warning signals and is carrying out further rescue work. A total of fourteen people made up the crew and twelve are still missing
