Date: 28th August 2013     Type: Fire     Voyage: India/Middle East/Europe

Reports have been received that Netherlands flag vessel MAERSK KAMPALA (80654gt built 2001) has suffered a serious cargo fire.

The fire broke out on 28th August whilst the vessel was approaching Suez north bound. Tugs have been sent to the scene to fight the fire. No injuries have been reported.

The vessel is on a voyage from ports in India and the Middle East destined for ports in Europe. She is also likely also to be carrying cargoes for transhipment to and from elsewhere.

Latest information suggests that around 1,500 of the approximately 4000 containers on board may have been affected, with cargo damage exceeding US$100M as a result.

This is the second major containership fire in the last few months and follows the total loss of the MOL COMFORT following a cargo fire earlier this year.
