Date: 30th March 2013     Type: Fire / Water Ingress    Voyage: Turkey to Oman

Reports have been received that Liberian flag vessel ATLANTIK CONFIDENCE (16252gt built 1996) experienced a fire in her engine room off Oman on 30th March 2013.

The crew abandoned the vessel and were picked up by a passing tanker with support provided by a US Navy vessel in the area.

Initial reports suggested that the vessel sank after the incident and photographs suggested that she did take on water. However, latest reports suggest that the ship is still afloat.

The vessel is carrying a cargo of steel from Turkey to Oman. We understand that salvage vessels are now in attendance.

Assuming that the ship can be saved, it is likely that a salvage claim will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo on board this vessel. It is also possible that general average will be declared.
