Reports have been received that Liberian flag vessel HANSA BERLIN (9609gt built 1993) has run aground off Cuba about 20 miles west of Havana.

Reportedly the vessel suffered an engine failure in heavy seas caused by hurricane Isaac. The crew has been evacuated by helicopter.

HANSA BERLIN trades between ports in South and Central America and the Caribbean. She may also be carrying transhipment cargo for other parts of the world.

It is possible that a salvage claim will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo on board this vessel. It is also possible that general average will be declared.
