*****Preliminary Report*****

Reports have been received that Panama flag vessel MSC IDIL (51,836gt built 1992) suffered an explosion on board on 11th May.

The accident took place off the coast of Puerto Rico. Early reports suggest that the explosion was caused during welding on board.

Extensive damage was suffered by the vessel which has taken on water and developed a list. A salvage teams is being send to the site to assess the situation.

MSC IDIL trades between ports in the US and Central America and southern Europe. Her last port of call was Cristobal from where she sailed on 9th May destined for Spain and Portugal.

It is likely that there will also be other cargoes on board the vessel which are destined for other ports around the world.

It is likely that a salvage claim will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo on board this vessel. It is also possible that general average will be declared.
