Date: 26th August 2011     Type: Fire     Voyage: Indonesia to USA

Reports have been received that smouldering coal ignited into a fire on board Marshall Islands flag bulk carrier KING HAKAN (42868 gt, built 2011) in Long Island Sound early this morning.

The Coast Guard and the Fire Department remain on the scene with crews from PSEG, Fairfield police and the Fire Department of New York..

KING HAKAN, bound for the PSEG Bridgeport Harbor Generating Station, called for help around 0105 and the Coast Guard was the first to respond.

Shortly after the Coast Guard cutter arrived the smouldering coal caught fire and the Fairfield Fire Department was called to the ship.

The vessel is moored about four miles from the Fairfield shoreline. Firefighters with gear and equipment were taken to the ship by the Fairfield police boat to search for crew members and control the fire.

The cargo is from Indonesia. KING HAKAN sailed Banjarmasin Jun 29 and anchored off Bridgeport on August 17th.
