Date: Around 27th May 2011     Type: Fire     Voyage: Thailand to Japan

Reports have been received that Panama flag vessel MOL AQUA (12,559gt built 2009) has suffered a major fire on board whilst berthed at Laem Chabang.

The fire is understood to have originated in a container of computers. This quickly spread to other cargoes and fire fighting began. The vessel’s crew of 19 was evacuated.

We understand that the fire has affected 147 of the 200 containers on board the vessel. An investigation into the accident is underway.

MOL AQUA generally trades between ports in Thailand, South Korea and Japan but it is likely that she will also be carrying transhipment cargo for other ports.

The owners of the vessel have declared General Average. The owners and insurers of the cargo will be required to provide average bonds and guarantees, except where the cargo has been lost.
