Date: 5th March 2010     Type: Hijacking     Voyage: UAE to Tanzania

Reports have been received that Singapore flag vessel UBT OCEAN (6149gt built 2009) has been hijacked by Somali pirates off Madagascar.

The chemical tanker is understood to have been on a voyage from the United Arab Emirates to Tanzania when she was attacked at the end of last week.

Generally, cargo vessels are released from Somalia after a ransom is paid by the Shipowners or their Insurers. Shipowners then usually claim a proportion of any ransom payment from cargo owners/insurers as a general average contribution.

Because of this, it is important that the full circumstances of any hijacking are properly investigated so that the extent of cargo owners’/insurers’ liability can be confirmed.
