Date: 3rd February 2010     Type: Hijacking     Voyage: Ukraine to India

Reports have been received that North Korean flag vessel RIM (3493gt built 1973) has been hijacked by Somali pirates today in the Gulf of Aden.

The elderly vessel is understood to have been oustide the safe transit corridor when she was taken. She is now thought to be headed for the Somali coast.

RIM was last reported to have called in Berdiansk, Ukraine, from where she sailed on 27th December. She was originally destined for Kandla, India.

Generally, cargo vessels are released from Somalia after a ransom is paid by the Shipowners or their Insurers. Shipowners then usually claim a proportion of any ransom payment from cargo owners/insurers as a general average contribution.

Because of this, it is important that the full circumstances of any hijacking are properly investigated so that the extent of cargo owners’/insurers’ liability can be confirmed.
