Date: 20th November 2009     Type: Hijacking     Voyage: From Yemen

Reports have been received that Panama flag vessel RED SEA SPIRIT (10968gt built 1978) has been hijacked off the coast of Yemen by Somali pirates.

This latest attack is the most recent of several piracy incidents in the area recently following an upsurge in pirate activity during the last few weeks.

Commonly a ransom is paid by the vessel owners or insurers to free the ship. A proportion of that ransom is then claimed from cargo insurers as a general average contribution.

We represent the owners and insurers of several cargoes that have been taken by Somali pirates. On behalf of our Clients we investigate whether cargo interests are obliged to contribute to the ransom and, where appropriate, have been successful in negotiating a reduction in the contribution being claimed. This work we undertake on a “no cure – no pay” basis for our Clients.
