Date: 22.10.09     Type: Hijacking     Voyage: Russia/Kenya

Reports have been received that Panama flag vessel AL KHALIQ (22361gt built 1984) has been hijacked by Somali pirates today.

There has been a recent upsurge in pirate activity in the Indian Ocean following the end of the monsoon. This is third vessel taking in the last two weeks.

The vessel will be held in Somali until the Shipowners pay a ransom. After this, it is likely that the Shipowners will claim a contribution to the ransom from cargo owners as General Average.

The vessel was reported to have sailed from the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk at the beginning of the month. She is understood to have originally been destined for Mombasa.

If you have insured cargo on board this vessel and require our assistance to deal with any security demands and general average claims, please contact us as soon as possible.
