Date: 08.08.09     Type: Engine Breakdown     Voyage: Far East/India Subcontinent (Transhipment Cargoes Worldwide)

Reports have been received that Liberian flag vessel APL CHICAGO (35573gt built 2007) suffered a main engine breakdown on 8th August 2009.

The containership had originally sailed east bound from Singapore on 5th August 2009 but was forced to return to port because of the engine problem. Here repairs are being undertaken before the vessel resumes her voyage.

APL Chicago is generally employed between Thailand, Singapore and the Indian Subcontinent. She will however have on board transhipment cargoes loaded at and destined for numerous different ports around the world.

As a result of this incident, the Owners of the vessel have declared General Average. General Average security is therefore required from the owners and insurers of all cargo on board before the cargo can be delivered.

It is important that the claim is properly investigated so that it can be established whether or not there is a liability on cargo insurers to contribute to the costs incurred by the Shipowners. We recommend that we undertake this task. We are already instructed by the insurers of part of the cargo on board.
